TeeWire Print Agent

A small free program that lets a receipt printer plugged into a Windows PC by USB print from TeeWire. Install it once and it runs by itself.

Do I Need This?

Yes

If your receipt printer is connected to a Windows computer with a USB cable.

No

If your printer has an internet network cable (hard line) running into it, or is on Wi-Fi. Those print on their own and need nothing installed.

What It Actually Does

TeeWire runs on the internet. A USB cable only reaches the one computer it is plugged into, so on its own a USB printer has no way to receive anything from TeeWire, and nothing prints.

This program closes that gap. It sits quietly on that Windows PC, checks TeeWire every few seconds for new receipts, and hands them straight to the printer.

Everything then works exactly as it does on a networked printer

Receipts print automatically, the cash drawer opens on cash and check sales only (never on a card sale, never on a reprint), the paper cuts, your logo and QR code print, and TeeWire shows the printer as Live.

It works with any Star TSP143IV, including the USB-only TSP143IVU that has no network socket at all.

Compare it by running certutil -hashfile teewire-print-agent.exe SHA256 in a command prompt. If it does not match, do not run the file. Call us.

Windows will warn you the first time

You will see “Windows protected your PC.” Choose More info, then Run anyway. Windows shows this for any program it has not seen many times before. If you would rather not click through it, call us and we will do the install with you.

Before You Install: Three Printer Settings

Install Star’s Windows driver for the printer first, so Windows can see it. You only need the driver. You do not need Star’s CloudPRNT settings screen. Then, in the driver’s settings, check these three things.

  1. Emulation is set to StarPRNT

    Not “Star Line Mode.” In Line Mode your logo and QR code print as garbage.

  2. The driver’s own cash drawer setting is “Do not open”

    Otherwise the drawer pops open on every receipt, including card sales.

  3. The printer is installed for all users

    Not just the person signed in at the time.

Setting It Up

  1. Download the file onto the right PC

    It has to be the Windows PC the printer is physically plugged into.

  2. Right-click it and choose “Run as administrator”

    A window opens and walks you through the rest.

  3. Pick your printer from the numbered list

    The program lists the printers Windows can see. Just type the number.

  4. Paste the address from TeeWire

    In TeeWire, open POS Config Settings, then Registers & Hardware, then Hardware. Find your printer and press the Copy button next to its address. Paste it into the window and press Enter. Right-click inside the window to paste.

  5. Test it

    Back in TeeWire, press Test print, then Test the cash drawer if you have one. A receipt should appear within about five seconds.

If something is not right

Run the program again and choose “Check that everything is working.” It tests the printer and the connection to TeeWire and tells you which part is wrong, in plain English.

Questions People Ask

Do I have to run it again every time the computer restarts?
No. You set it up once. It starts on its own every time the PC boots, nobody has to sign in or open anything, and if it ever stops, Windows restarts it automatically. You would only run it again to change something or to check what is wrong.
Does the cash drawer still work?
Yes, and by the same rules as everywhere else in TeeWire: the drawer opens on cash and check sales only. It does not open on a card sale, and it does not open on a reprint. The drawer plugs into the back of the printer, not the PC.
Does the computer have to stay on?
Yes, and this is the one real catch. That PC is now the go-between, so if it is shut down or asleep, receipts stop printing even though the printer itself is fine. If a network cable can reach your printer, that setup has no such catch. A $20 network switch will usually split an existing wall jack in two and solve it for good.
Will it work on a Mac or an iPad?
No. This program is Windows only. If your printer is plugged into a Mac or an iPad, you will need to put the printer on your network with a cable instead.
Does it slow the computer down?
No. It uses almost nothing. It checks TeeWire every five seconds and is idle the rest of the time.
How do I remove it?
Open a command prompt as administrator and run teewire-print-agent uninstall, or call us and we will talk you through it.

Is It Safe?

The program contains no passwords, card details or customer information. It is a delivery tool: it collects a receipt that TeeWire has already prepared and passes it to your printer.

The address you paste during setup is the one thing worth protecting, so treat it like a password. The program stores it encrypted, locked to that one computer, and readable only by an administrator. If someone copied the file to a different PC, it would be useless to them.

TeeWire never accepts card numbers through this program, and receipts only ever show a card’s brand and last four digits.
